No one achieves success entirely alone. We all rely on people and places to support us along our journey. Tara Magee is no different. With the support of flexible programs and valuable mentorship, Tara鈥檚 journey reflects perseverance, resourcefulness and the power of key resources.

Her career began in clinical healthcare roles before shifting to administrative work. As she gained experience, Tara realized she needed to further her education to align with her evolving career ambitions. This pursuit led her to project management. 鈥淚鈥檝e worked in healthcare for over 20 years, starting as a medical assistant and surgical tech,鈥 Tara recalled. 鈥淭o continue to advance, I needed more education to back up my on-the-job skills. Beginning in 2008, I made the extra effort to return to school to improve my skills and ability to stay at the forefront of my field.鈥

In 2011, Tara earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in healthcare administration from 小黄书, marking a pivotal moment in her career. 鈥淭hat degree opened doors for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t led me into project management, where I鈥檝e been thriving ever since.鈥

Her role as a project manager offered the variety Tara craved.

鈥淓very day is different, and that鈥檚 what excites me about project management. You鈥檙e always learning, tackling multiple projects and adapting to different processes,鈥 she explained. 鈥淢y time at Herzing has helped me excel with the tools I use daily.鈥

The Flexibility of Online Learning: A Game-Changer

For someone managing both a full-time job and family responsibilities, flexibility was key to Tara鈥檚 educational success. Like many Herzing students, she found the university鈥檚 online programs a lifeline.

鈥淕oing to a traditional classroom wasn鈥檛 realistic for me,鈥 Tara admitted. 鈥淚 needed something flexible, and Herzing鈥檚 online structure allowed me to attend classes when it fits my schedule.鈥

Tara鈥檚 experience in Herzing鈥檚 online bachelor鈥檚 program was so positive that when she pursued her master鈥檚 degree in project management, she didn鈥檛 hesitate to return to Herzing.

鈥淗erzing鈥檚 eight-week classes are fast-paced, which I appreciate. But even though it鈥檚 intense, the support system makes it manageable,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he professors, student advisors and tutoring services were all amazing. They helped me stay on track, especially when balancing work, family and school. Time management is critical in an online program, and I鈥檓 grateful for Herzing鈥檚 support.鈥

The Power of Mentorship: A Lifeline in Uncertain Times

One of the most significant turning points in Tara鈥檚 journey came through a mentoring relationship with Dr. Sandra Jolley, an associate professor at Herzing鈥檚 online degree programs department with more than 30 years of experience in project management. Tara鈥檚 connection with Dr. Jolley helped her navigate her coursework and opened doors to new career opportunities.

In 2024, Tara faced two layoffs in six months鈥攁n unexpected series of setbacks that would have derailed many people鈥檚 career plans. However, Dr. Jolley stepped in to provide emotional support and practical help.

鈥淚 was struggling after losing my job. I reached out to Dr. Jolley, asking for an extension on an assignment. She was incredibly understanding and even offered me more time than I had asked for,鈥 Tara said, recalling how the support didn鈥檛 stop there. 鈥淒uring our one-on-one sessions, I connected with Dr. Jolley. She learned about my job search and without me asking, she wrote three different recommendation letters for me. Those letters were instrumental in helping me secure multiple interviews, that ultimately led to a new job.鈥

For Dr. Jolley, she has seen many students progress toward their degrees and believes her role鈥攁nd that of all teachers鈥攊s to support their students both in the classroom and after they鈥檝e graduated.

鈥淭ara鈥檚 enthusiasm for learning and her ability to focus, especially in her writing, stood out right from the start,鈥 said Dr. Jolley. 鈥淚n project management, being able to write a focused project plan is critical鈥攊t鈥檚 like a contract. Tara excelled at that, and I wanted to support her even more.鈥

Tara鈥檚 story underscores the importance of networking and building relationships with professors and fellow students鈥攁dvice she now shares with current and incoming Herzing students.

鈥淣etworking is critical. My connection with Dr. Jolley was invaluable. She went above and beyond to help me, and her recommendations were key in getting me hired,鈥 Tara said. 鈥淚 encourage all students to build those relationships. You never know where they might lead.鈥

Looking Ahead: Senior Leadership and Mentoring

As Tara continues her educational journey鈥攐n track to complete her master鈥檚 in project management by April 2025鈥攈er sights are set on bigger goals. She aims to earn her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and ascend to a senior leadership role where she can continue to help and mentor others.

For students considering 小黄书, Tara鈥檚 advice is simple: take advantage of the resources available to you.

鈥淭he resources Herzing offers, from professors to tutoring services, are there to help you succeed,鈥 she emphasized. 鈥淎nd don鈥檛 be afraid to reach out. Building those connections with professors and classmates can make all the difference, not just in school, but in your career.鈥
