If You Don鈥檛 Know What to Do With Your Life, Read This

You feel like you need a change, but you鈥檙e not sure what to do next. Maybe you鈥檝e put your dreams on hold and you鈥檙e wondering if you鈥檒l ever have the chance to pursue them. Or, maybe you鈥檝e tried college before and it didn鈥檛 work out.

Now what?

No matter where you are in your career, don鈥檛 give up on the possibility that you could find a rewarding career you love. Here are some things to think about as you consider your next steps:

鈥淚鈥檓 not sure if college is the right path for me.鈥

Earning a college degree is one of the most important investments you can make in your future. Not only do you increase your opportunities for employment, you also boost your lifetime earning potential.

In fact, a study by Georgetown University鈥檚 Center on Education and the Workforce concluded that bachelor鈥檚 degree holders earn 84 percent more than those with a high school diploma.

鈥淚 wanted to change careers and get a college degree, but I was not sure if that was possible at my age and with three kids,鈥 said Herzing-Toledo graduate Trisha Warner. 鈥淚 was a certified nursing assistant for years and wanted to have a degree to open up more options for me. I enrolled in the surgical technology program, and it was the best decision I have ever made for my family and for my future.鈥

鈥淚 feel like I鈥檓 stuck in my career.鈥

Maybe you have a degree, but you鈥檙e not convinced that you鈥檙e in the right industry or on the right career path. Completing your undergraduate degree or advancing your degree can open the door to new opportunities within your organization, or help you switch careers entirely.

Earning a degree in information technology helped Ronald Crayon make the jump from a dead-end telemarketing job to a high-tech career at one of the world鈥檚 leading health IT companies.

"I was sick and tired of my job,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 was working long hours for low pay. I just felt it was time to do something."

鈥淐ompleting my bachelor鈥檚 degree helped me become well-rounded IT professional. I feel that now I have the skills and the knowledge to really make a difference.鈥

For Stephanie Dennis, earning her MBA was the key to a career-changing promotion. It wasn鈥檛 easy going back to school while raising two kids and working full-time, but she made it work. 鈥淚 have no doubt that my degree will support my long-term career success,鈥 she says.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 have time to go back to school.鈥

Going back to school may not be easy, but it鈥檚 a decision that will pay dividends in your future. Many universities today offer online courses, making it easier for busy students 鈥 many of whom have families or careers to think about 鈥 to fit education into their lives.

鈥淣ever doubt that you can do it, because you can!鈥 says Rasheta Tadesse, who earned her ASN from Herzing-Akron this year. 鈥淚 worked a 40+ hour job and completed this program. It will not be easy, but as long as you keep moving forward and take it day by day, you will be fine!鈥

Whether you鈥檙e just starting your career or looking to make a change, don鈥檛 overlook the importance of your education. Finding the right school that can offer you the flexibility and support you need is key to your success.

BLS pay estimates calculate the median annual wage for various occupations. Per the BLS the median wage for an occupation is: "The wage at which half of the workers in the occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. Median wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey." Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook 2024. BLS median wage estimates do not represent entry-level wages and/or salaries. Multiple factors, including prior experience, age, geographic market in which you want to work, and degree level and field, will affect career outcomes, including starting salary and earnings as an experienced employee. Herzing neither represents that its graduates will earn the median salaries calculated by BLS for a particular job nor guarantees that graduation from its program will result in a job, promotion, particular wage or salary, or other career growth.
